How your Toronto athletes are doing so far at the Beijing Olympics:
• Colin Russell, a University of Toronto student living in Burlington, failed to advance to the medals round in the men’s 200M Freestyle after posting a seventh-place time in the semi-final this morning. He was the lone Canadian in the final after star swimmer Brent Hayden withdrew from the race to concentrate on his other races coming up.
Russell, who was born in Oshawa, qualified to compete for Canada in Beijing with a win in the 200-metre freestyle event at the 2008 CN swimming trials in Montreal. He won his first national title at the 2005 World Trials, which was also the first time he earned a spot on the national team and the first time he represented Canada internationally. A shoulder injury forced him to withdraw from the 2007 World Championships.
-- Toronto’s Michael Winter competed in eventing individual cross country today. Riding King Pin, he placed a disappointing 53rd of 70 riders in the individual cross country while the Canadian team held on to their ninth place standing.
- Toronto’s Chris Cook continues as Canada’s only contending sailor so far as competition continued Monday at the Olympic Sailing Centre. He is in fourth place in the Finn class, with 33 points, trailing Great Britain (17 points), the U.S. (18) and France (26). He finished 23rd and fifth in the day’s two races, the fifth and sixth of the 10-race series, but under scoring system that allows him to discard his lowest finish, that blip won’t count against him.
- Toronto’s Jennifer Provan, skipping Toronto’s Martha Henderson and Sarnia’s Katie Abbott, had a middling day, finishing ninth and 12th among 15 boats in the fifth and sixth races. They are 12th with 40 points, far behind leading Great Britain (15 points) and the Netherlands (18). Australia holds third with 32 points, level with the U.S.
-- The men’s field hockey team - with eight players and coaches from Toronto - made its debut at the Games today losing 6-1 to Australia. Canada, which must finish in the top four in its six-team preliminary round pool to reach its goal of a top eight finish, faces Pakistan on Wednesday night.
