Emergency a reminder to be prepared

August 18, 2008 12:57 PM Re: 'Blast shakes North York,' News, Aug. 13.

This incident shows us that it is a good idea to put together a simple checklist of things to take with us in the event of an emergency.

We can sit at leisure now and prepare for the worst (although always hoping for the best), stick a list on the fridge or somewhere handy and add to it when you think of something new.

Time for province to provide dental coverage for seniors

July 31, 2008 11:30 AM Senior's dental care coverage is long overdue.

I am a 85-year-young senior. I had a stroke three years ago and I use a walker, but I am doing well. I don't have a wife but I have a caregiver. I am currently applying to Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care for long-term care.

I had a visit with a dentist a few weeks ago. It was roughly a hour's visit. He told me at the end of the session he was... more

Mayor's transportation vision of Toronto must be stopped

July 22, 2008 10:37 AM Mayor David Miller's transportation initiatives are going to impede vehicular traffic. I believe Miller is trying to create a situation where people will be forced out of their cars and onto public transportation.

Miller is no visionary. Miller is going to cause irretrievable harm to downtown Toronto. Miller, if allowed to go unchallenged, will cause problems that will cost future generations... more

Gardiner does what it's supposed to do

July 8, 2008 02:08 PM So the Gardiner is costly to maintain and some consider it an eyesore, but it does what it was intended to do which was to speedily and safely move vast amounts of traffic while minimizing pollution.

Taking down another part, particularly where it serves such a great purpose of directly connecting with the DVP, will injure, not help, the city.

And I mean injure, as it will add thousands of... more

Letter writer shocked by Order of Canada award

July 8, 2008 11:26 AM I am shocked by the Order of Canada award to abortionist Dr. Henry Morgentaler. I am profoundly shocked by the governor general's conduct and I am profoundly shocked by Liberal leader Stephane Dion's endorsement of the award.

Did the governor general consult the Archbishop of Canterbury on this matter?

I can't believe that we as Canadians will uphold a value that eliminates the... more

Bombardier must build in Canada

July 7, 2008 03:42 PM Canada is in the midst of a crisis in manufacturing. In the last year alone more than 110,000 jobs have been lost in the sector. Amongst all this job turmoil, the country's aerospace industry is flying high ... for now.

The Conference Board of Canada reports the industry is set to post its highest profits in five years with production surpassing its pre-9-11 peak. This high plane that we are... more

Premise of Telecom editorial incorrect

July 2, 2008 10:28 AM re: yk, ey, sc, ny,: 'Good first step in implementing task force advice,' Editorial, June 20

The opening premise of this editorial took issue with the time of day the news conference was held to announce the City's $75 million investment in public housing.

Here are the facts:

In arranging the news conference and issuing the media advisory; we were, of course, required to await the... more

Inflated numbers shows different picture

July 2, 2008 10:28 AM Put simply, the TTC inflates ridership numbers as it is really collecting 'revenue ride' numbers, whereby one rider doing two journeys a day is double counted.

The TTC will then use this figure (generally 1.5 million a day) to assert they take one million cars off the road. (If ridership is actually less than one million how can they claim this, particularly when a large number of users do not... more

Gun plan a worthy venture

June 30, 2008 09:03 AM Re: 'Gun plan laudable, but more pressing issues face Miller,' Editorial, May 30

While a newspaper may be expected to display a bias on certain issues, your 30 May edition of the Mirror goes to extremes on the issue of Mayor Miller's gun plan. The editorial and City Views, both by David Nickle as well as David Soknacki's column all contain negative views of this one aspect of the mayor's... more

Right governance model for Toronto still unresolved

June 19, 2008 11:45 AM The headline to the article by city affairs journalist David Nickle on a stronger city mayor and the Toronto/Chicago mayor power comparison sets the theme for a more inclusive public debate. The need to get the right governance model for the megacity remains an unresolved public issue and influences almost all decisions and policies in city council. And by extension this need impacts the lives of... more
