Davisville Village resident Taylor Lau is a pretty normal 10-year-old. She's cheerful, loves funny movies and dancing and, as television viewers will soon discover, is smarter than a lot of adults.

Lau will appear in five upcoming episodes of Are You Smarter Than A Canadian Fifth Grader? alongside several other bright young students.

She decided to audition for the show after seeing an article in an newspaper, but - despite having the smarts required to be on the show - did not hold out too much hope over being selected.

"I thought I would audition just for fun," she said. "When I heard that I was going to be on the show, I was so excited."

Her friends and classmates at Bennington Heights Elementary School were also delighted for her, and eager to cheer her on during the show's run.

"They all thought it was really cool that I got picked," she said. "They're really looking forward to getting to see someone they know on TV."

Lau said her best school subject is English, and that she enjoys studying spelling and language. The wide variety of subjects tackled on the show, however, were not enough to stump her.

"Some of the answers I didn't know right away, but I took a moment to think about it and I was able to figure it out," she said. "The whole show went really well."

In fact, the most challenging part of the show, she said, was not matching wits with contestants, but being chosen to answer the questions.

"I always wanted to be the one answering the questions," she said. "It was all really fun, and I loved everything about it."

Lau aspires to someday become a fashion designer, a fitting choice given that her first claim to fame came when she appeared in catalogues for Eaton's and The Bay as a baby.

In the meantime, she spends her free time enjoying ballet, jazz and tap dancing, reading and art.

Lau will appear on five episodes of the show, the first airing on Global television Thursday, Oct. 25 at 9 p.m., with subsequent episodes airing at 9 p.m. the four following Thursdays.
