Scarborough bowler finishes 29th at world event

The Canadian girls' tenpin bowling team finished 9th at the World Youth Championships in Orlando, Florida.

Scarborough's Jennifer Besana was one of the four members on the girl's team.

Canada was in first place at the end of day one in the competition, but a slow start in games four and five left them 132 pins behind fourth and the final qualifying position.

Korea won gold and Japan earned silver.

Besana finished as the top Canadian in the Masters event at 3603 in 29th place.

Swimmers head to Mexico for championship

Two Scarborough swimmers will be competing at the 2nd FINA World Junior Championship in Monterrey, Mexico from July 8 to 13.

Scott Jessett, 18, and Paige Schultz, 16, are members of Swimming Canada's 24-member junior team.

The competition features the world's best developing swimmers and future Olympians for female athletes aged 14 to 17 and males 15 to 18 years old.

Jessett is a distance freestyle swimmer who swims for the Scarborough Swim Club. He placed 7th at the 2008 Olympic trials in the 1500m freestyle.

Schultz is a individual medley (IM) specialist who swims for the Toronto Swim Club. She placed 6th at the 2008 Olympic trials in the 200m IM.

Four Scarborough squads reach Robbie finals

Four Scarborough teams managed to make it to the final round of the 42nd annual Robbie International Soccer Tournament.

However, in all four cases the local squads had to settle for second place honours.

The North Scarborough Bulldogs U11 boys played their championship game against East York United Football Club and lost with a final score of 3-1. Benny Ampofo was the goal scorer for the Bulldogs.

In the U13 girls division, the Scarborough United Fury 1 made it to the finals and lost 4-1 against the Oakville Hurricane '95. Tiffany Smith scored the Fury's only goal.

The Wexford Wolverines U14 girls competed in the championship game against Newmarket United and lost 3-0.
