An eight-year-old boy is recovering from serious head and foot injuries after being struck by a stolen car yesterday while playing in front of his friend’s house.
Police said the stolen blue Honda Civic was heading the wrong way on Amherst Avenue, a one-way street in the Oakwood Avenue and Vaughan Road area.
“We assume the driver realized he was going the wrong way,...attempted to do a turnabout and ended up hitting a child,” said Sgt. Tim Burrows, adding the car then “accelerated” and struck two parked vehicles.
The three men in the stolen car fled on foot.
“The car has been sent to our forensic unit to be analyzed for any fingerprints or DNA evidence,” Burrows said today. “It was stolen yesterday at 10 a.m. from an address on Eileen Avenue.”
The child’s big toe was severed in the 5 p.m. collision. Doctors at the Hospital for Sick Children weren’t able to reattach it. The boy also received serious lacerations to the head.
“He’s going to be held in hospital for three or four days,” said Burrows, of the traffic services unit. “Understandably, he’s upset. The family is a little traumatized over the situation.”
There are vague descriptions of the suspects, who are in their 20s.
