An eight-year-old boy is recovering from serious head and foot injuries after being struck by a stolen car while playing in front of his friend's house yesterday.

Police said a stolen blue Honda Civic carrying three men was heading the wrong way on Amherst Avenue, a one-way street in the Oakwood Avenue and Vaughan Road area.

"We assume the driver realized he was going the wrong way ... attempted to do a turnabout and ended up hitting a child," said Sgt. Tim Burrows, adding the car then hit two other vehicles.

The three men in the stolen car fled on foot.

The child's big toe was severed in the 5 p.m. collision. Doctors at the Hospital for Sick Children weren't able to reattach it. The boy also received serious lacerations to the head.

"He's going to be held in hospital for three or four days," Burrows said today. "Understandably, he's upset. The family is a little traumatized over the situation."

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
