An elderly woman is recovering from serious injuries after the car she was driving struck two buildings on St. Clair Avenue West the evening of July 18.

Police said the 77-year-old hit a bank at 870 St. Clair Ave. W. while reversing from a parking spot at 6:23 p.m.

"Then for some unknown reason (the car) rapidly accelerated through the parking lot, striking 840 St. Clair," Const. Mig Roberts said. "The victim was partially ejected from the driver's side door."

The senior received a broken leg and lacerations to the head and was rushed by ambulance to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for treatment. Her injuries are considered serious but not life-threatening.

"Apparently she may have suffered some type of a medical episode that resulted in her accelerating rapidly," Roberts said. "There were witnesses in the area, which helped us out with determining exactly what happened."
