College to open new campus on waterfront

George Brown College is expanding to the waterfront.

Set to open in 2011, the new state-of-the-art campus will be home to the post-secondary institution's new Centre for Health Sciences, its first student residence and a recreational complex.

The new two-building campus will be at a two-acre site on the south side of Queens Quay Boulevard between Lower Jarvis and Lower Sherbourne streets.

"George Brown College will join Waterfront Toronto's revitalization efforts and its new campus will be a cornerstone of the East Bayfront community," said Mark Wilson, Waterfront Toronto's chairman, in a release.

"East Bayfront will come alive with the student population living, working and socializing during the day, and in the evenings all year round."

George Brown College's president Anne Sado said in a release they'd been looking for the right location to expand for several years.

Construction is currently underway on TEDCO's First Waterfront Place, Corus Entertainment Inc.'s future headquarters.

East Bayfront, which runs from Jarvis to Cherry streets along the waterfront, is a new mixed-use community that will be home to about 6,000 people.
